On 19th February, the planetGOLD Zambia Project established the grassroot Community Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining Committee (CASGM) in Shiwang’andu District aimed at strengthening formalisation and sector coordination.

The project GEF GOLD+: Advancing Formalization and Mercury-Free Gold in Suriname has officially transitioned from the Full National Implementation (Full NIM) modality to Support to National Implementation (Support to NIM). Under this adjusted implementation structure, the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) remains the Implementing Partner, while the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide targeted support services under the Support to NIM modality.

On 12th February, the planetGOLD Zambia Project conducted a Gender Mapping and Mainstreaming engagement in Matipa Area of Chisamba District, Central Province in collaboration with the District Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining Technical Committee (DASGM).

During a joint field visit to Lebi Doti, planetGOLD Suriname and the Medical Mission conducted a school visit focused on the importance of early awareness about the dangers of mercury.

Through this project, planetGOLD Suriname aims not only to reduce the use of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining, but also to strengthen awareness of mercury’s health and environmental impacts. By working closely with Medical Mission and local communities, the project contributes to stronger, better-informed, and healthier living environments.

La reunión del 30 de enero en Paso Yobái buscó impulsar la formalización de la minería local. Autoridades y planetGOLD destacaron la importancia de habilitaciones, facturación al día y cumplimiento ambiental. Se presentaron beneficios para los mineros, incluyendo acceso a tecnologías más limpias y desarrollo sostenible.

Through internal technical alignment and stakeholder consultations, key agreements were reached on technical design, implementation planning, roles and responsibilities, and exit strategies.

As the planetGOLD Uganda project reaches its halfway mark of implementation, the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector stands at a defining moment, one where every stakeholder is moving to make mercury use a thing of the past.

planetGOLD Suriname has completed the installation of a digital registration system supporting the formalization and monitoring of the gold mining sector. This activity is part of the planetGOLD Suriname / GEF GOLD+ project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through a grant of USD 5,250,000 and jointly implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The system is currently in its testing and optimization phase to ensure reliability, data integrity, and long-term sustainability.
