The meeting marked the beginning of a process aimed at strengthening the relationship between the project and the Matawai community. Mutual trust, transparent communication, and sustainable engagement were central throughout the discussions. During the session, extensive information was shared regarding the objectives of planetGOLD Suriname, the intended collaboration with interior communities, and the ways in which local knowledge, experiences, and insights can contribute to the further implementation of the project.

In accordance with the traditional decision-making structures of the Matawai community, representatives of the Traditional Authorities were given ample opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns, and share their perspectives. The meeting was characterized by a constructive and open dialogue, in which respect for culture, tradition, and community interests played a central role.

In addition to the project presentation, an extensive question-and-answer session was held, followed by internal consultations within the Traditional Authorities and a joint discussion on possible forms of collaboration. Discussions focused not only on the substantive objectives of the project, but also on the conditions necessary for a successful partnership based on mutual understanding and trust.

The discussions highlighted the importance of continuous coordination among all parties involved and reaffirmed the shared commitment to work toward responsible gold mining practices and the development of the affected communities.

The introductory meeting therefore marks the beginning of a process in which dialogue, participation, and respect for traditional structures form the foundation for continued collaboration. The insights and key points raised during the meeting will be taken into consideration in the next phase of the project.

With this first meeting, a solid foundation has been established for a partnership in which community, sustainability, and shared responsibility go hand in hand.
