The planetGOLD Ghana Project is strengthening efforts to promote safer and more sustainable mining practices through health education and community awareness activities in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region. The initiative supports the project's goal of reducing mercury use in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) while improving the health and environmental wellbeing of mining communities.

On 1st May 2026, the planetGOLD Zambia Project joined the people of Rufunsa District in commemorating Labour Day, reaffirming its commitment to promoting decent work, safer mining practices and sustainable livelihoods among Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Miners.

As part of efforts to promote responsible artisanal and small-scale gold mining and reduce mercury use, the planetGOLD Ghana Project conducted a health education session at Smart Micky Mines in Akatakyieso, one of its pilot sites. The programme engaged about 30 miners, including mercury users and other mining personnel, to raise awareness of the health, safety, and environmental risks of mercury and to encourage the adoption of safer alternatives.

On 29 April 2026, a meeting was held between the Commission of the planetGOLD Suriname Project and the PMU. During the session, extensive discussions took place on the collaboration between both entities.

The planetGOLD Ghana Project’s Health Education Team conducted outreach programmes at Dompoase Senior High School and T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, reaching over 5,200 students, teachers, and school authorities. The initiative aimed to increase awareness of the health and environmental risks of mercury exposure from Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) activities and to encourage community participation in promoting safer, mercury-free mining practices.

Alianzas científicas internacionales fortalecen la investigación ambiental en Honduras mediante capacitación en geoquímica aplicada para comunidades mineras.

A total of 65 health professionals and community volunteers from the Adansi North District participated in a two-day training workshop under the planetGOLD Ghana Project. The programme enhanced participants' knowledge of the health and environmental risks of mercury exposure from artisanal and small-scale gold mining and strengthened their capacity to prevent, identify, and manage mercury-related health conditions in mining communities.

On 20th March, the planetGOLD Zambia Project held a public lecture on Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) in Zambia at the Copperbelt University (CBU), Kitwe bringing together students, lecturers and key stakeholders to explore opportunities and challenges within the sector.
