As demand for responsibly sourced gold grows globally, Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Miners (ASGM) are increasingly expected to demonstrate that their gold is traceable and mined responsibly in accordance with recognised international standards such as the OECD guide lines.
To help miners respond to these evolving expectations, the planetGOLD Zambia Project conducted CRAFT Code (OECD guide lines) training at Kanyelele Mining Site in Mpika District, Muchinga Province on 24th June 2026.

Facilitated by Project Metallurgist Mr. Chikatala Munsanje, the training introduced ASGM miners to the principles of the Code of Risk-Mitigation for Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Miners engaging in formal trade, highlighting its role in promoting traceability, ethical sourcing and improved governance throughout the gold value chain.

Beyond technical guidance, the training created space for miners to discuss challenges affecting inclusion within the sector. ASGM miner Ms. Lucy Tembo raised concerns about persistent cultural beliefs and myths that discourage women from actively participating in mining activities, calling for greater efforts to address discrimination.

Supporting her appeal, Mr. Alfred Sooka urged fellow miners to reject exclusionary practices and recognise women as equal contributors to the mining value chain.

ASGM miner Mr. Bernad Mulenga encouraged the Project to continue adapting technical information into more locally accessible formats to improve understanding and implementation at community level.
The engagement demonstrated that responsible mining extends beyond environmental compliance. It also requires inclusive participation, respect for human rights and responsible business practices that strengthen miners' ability to access formal markets.

The Project continues to promote responsible sourcing through CRAFT Code training while expanding community engagement initiatives that encourage gender inclusion, responsible mining practices and increased participation in formal and legal gold markets.
