On 20th May 2026, the planetGOLD Zambia Project conducted Mercury-Free Processing Systems (MFPS) and CRAFT Code training in Chisamba District aimed at promoting responsible gold mining practices, environmental protection and safer mineral processing methods in the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector.
The training brought together Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold miners to strengthen awareness on environmental compliance, mercury-free technologies and responsible sourcing practices within the ASGM sector.
The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) delivered a presentation on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process in the ASGM sector. Facilitated by ZEMA representative Nanyinze Nakaundi, the session guided miners through the procedures required to obtain environmental approval and highlighted the importance of compliance, environmental stewardship and proper documentation in supporting formalisation efforts.
The planetGOLD Zambia Project Metallurgist, Chikatala Munsanje, facilitated sessions on Mercury-Free Processing Systems and explained various methods of gold extraction as well as the importance of reducing mercury use in ASGM activities.
He noted that the planetGOLD Zambia Project is promoting gravity concentration methods because they are safer, easier to use and more practical for artisanal miners.
Miners also received training on the Code of Risk-Mitigation for Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners Engaging in Formal Trade (CRAFT), which promotes traceability, due diligence and responsible sourcing of gold within the ASGM sector.
Mr. Munsanje explained the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas, highlighting the importance of ethical mining practices and compliance in accessing formal gold markets.
He stressed that formalisation remains a critical step towards creating safer and more sustainable opportunities for artisanal miners and encouraged participants to remain compliant with the CRAFT Code in order to reduce risks associated with forced labour, extortion, child labour and other harmful practices within the mining sector.
The training further highlighted the planetGOLD Zambia Project’s continued commitment to discouraging mercury use and cyanide leaching in ASGM while promoting environmental protection, responsible sourcing and respect for local communities and indigenous livelihoods.
