On 19th May 2026, the planetGOLD Zambia Project conducted a financial literacy training in Chisamba District aimed at equipping Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Miners (ASGM) with practical financial literacy and investment skills to support sustainable mining.
The training brought together local miners and focused on strengthening participants’ understanding of basic accounting, record keeping, budgeting and business investment to improve financial planning, accountability and informed decision-making within mining operations.
The training was facilitated by the project’s Accountant, Audrey Wangwe, who led sessions on accounting, budgeting and record keeping. Participants were taken through practical approaches to tracking income and expenditure, managing operational costs and improving financial accountability within their mining activities.
The project’s Metallurgist, Chikatala Munsanje, facilitated sessions on business investment and long-term economic sustainability in the ASGM sector. The discussions highlighted the importance of reinvesting in productive activities, adopting safer mining practices and exploring alternative income-generating opportunities to strengthen household incomes and economic resilience in mining communities.
Facilitators encouraged miners to adopt budgeting and savings practices that can help reduce financial risks, improve business growth and support more sustainable livelihoods.
The financial literacy trainings forms part of the planetGOLD Zambia Project’s continued efforts to improve access to finance and formal markets while promoting responsible mining practices in the ASGM sector.
