This document provides an approach to addressing health as part of the development of a National Action Plan (NAP) to reduce, and where feasible, eliminate mercury use as required under the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
Under the Convention, NAPs are a requirement for those Parties that determine that “artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) and processing in its territory is more than insignificant.” A NAP must include public health strategies on the exposure of artisanal and small-scale gold miners and their communities to mercury. Such strategies are expected to include gathering health data, training of health care workers, and
The mercury use and trade patterns in Sub-Saharan Africa have so far been difficult to assess by traditional statistics-based methods. This study aims at improving the understanding of mercury's role in the region through detailed investigation of import and export data in combination with field investigations in eight countries, literature study and a questionnaire survey sent to all countries in the region.
This report of the East Africa Research Fund (EARF) project ‘Understanding the Economic Contribution of Small-scale Mining in East Africa’ addresses the first of three main objectives of the Terms of Reference, namely to conduct an overarching synthesis to understand the impact of small-scale mining operations on economies and livelihoods in low to middle income countries, and explore the implications for three case study countries Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda in East Africa.
This socio-economic ASGM research methodology mainly covers the socio-economic aspects of the ASGM overview. It provides a suggested approach for collecting and analysing data in the ASGM sector. This socio-economic ASGM research methodology therefore supports NAP-executing countries in exploring key social, cultural, and economic aspects of the ASGM sector. This involves collecting mostly qualitative data at the local level, as well as addressing several quantitative indicators at the regional and national level.
This document has been designed to help guide the training of Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Miners (ASGM) on retort use and mercury exposure reduction. This guide is not meant as an exhaustive document on all retort types and their uses. It provides guidance for individual miners and mining communities, and for agencies implementing retort distribution programs or retort training.
Managing the risk of forced labor in ASM is complex. Strategies to tackle it must address the double objective of eradicating forced labor and making sure that innocent people who rely on Artisanal and Small-scale Mining for their livelihoods are not excluded from mineral supply chains. ASM is a poverty-alleviating activity that directly and indirectly employs hundreds of millions of people around the world; excluding ASM from mineral supply chains could have a terrible impact on their livelihoods. The aim of this toolkit is to provide a handson approach that will help organizations, companies and government institutions to cooperate with
This publication was designed as an easy to-use toolkit for identifying the gender dimensions of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). Comprehending this dimension of ASM means understanding how men and women are differentially involved in and affected by ASM, and the factors surrounding their engagement in ASM. By so doing, projects and policies can be put in place to ensure that men and women have equitable opportunities for participation at all stages of the ASM value chain, as well as access to the benefits of ASM, and that neither men nor women disproportionately bear the risks associated with ASM.
Hear from participants in the launch event for the planetGOLD programme (formerly known as GEF GOLD), held on February 18-19, 2019 in London, about their views on the opportunities and potential impacts a cleaner, more responsible ASGM sector could make in mining communities around the world.
Este video con subtítulos en español ofrece una visión general del sector ASGM y cómo el programa planetGOLD está trabajando en 9 países para mejorar significativamente las prácticas de producción y el entorno laboral de la minería artesanal y en pequeña escala.
