This document produced by the planetGOLD project in Peru puts a focus on the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector in the country in light of the global COVID-19 outbreak, providing an analysis of the effects of the pandemic and proposing some possible measures to facilitate its reactivation and formalization process.

Field facilitators with GOLD-ISMIA, the planetGOLD project in Indonesia, surveyed 50 respondents across six of their ASGM project locations to assess miner awareness of COVID-19, and the impact of the virus on their mining activities.

From 2002 to 2007, the Global Mercury Project demonstrated ways of overcoming barriers to the adoption of best practices and pollution prevention measures that limit the mercury contamination of international waters from artisanal and small-scale gold mining. The TransMAPE project was the result of coordinated action between the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (CIRDI) and the Vice Ministry of Mines in Ecuador with its related institutions, and with the support of other academic institutions and community-based ASM organizations. The primary long-term objective of the TransMAPE project was to co-design a training program for miners, communities, regulators and policy-makers to assist in the technical certification of small-scale artisanal mining in Ecuador. CIRDI’s aim was for a competency-based training program that builds the capacity of ASM miners.

The standard has been developed as an open source bolt-on standard to avoid contributing to the proliferation of standards—rather, it enhances the forest and climate requirements of existing standards, guidelines, regulations, requirements, and certification schemes.
