The planetGOLD Ghana project consults stakeholders in the Artisanal Small- scale Gold Mining (ASGM) value chain, on the preparation of a Social License for Mining entities. The workshop was used to gather insights from the stakeholders to facilitate the development of a robust Social License Protocol (SLP) that aligns with the project's objectives and the needs of the ASGM sector in Ghana.

In the small coastal town of Guapi, Colombia, Mary Luz Ante Orobio is meeting with a group she calls “the unstoppable women”. They are gathered around a wooden chest filled with loose cash, a ledger and a calculator. Orobio flips through the ledger, eyes poring over tidy notes outlining a series of financial investments. She jots down some numbers before distributing cash among the group.

Governments looking to formalize their artisanal gold sectors often see the ability to collect taxes as one of the primary benefits. But what if imposition of taxes, royalties and other fees are in fact one of the primary factors driving gold exporters and artisanal gold miners into informality? On Friday, June 21, 2024, the Government of Nicaragua, through the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) announced the launch of the global project planetGOLD Nicaragua, whose objective is to contribute to improving formalization and reducing the use of mercury in gold production from artisanal and small-scale mining in Nicaragua.

La Red Nacional de Mujeres Mineras de la MAPE del Perú, con el apoyo de SOLIDARIDAD, organizó el “Segundo Encuentro Presencial de Mujeres Mineras” en el distrito Ananea, región de Puno de la provincia San Antonio de Putina, del Perú, con el objetivo de realizar un intercambio de conocimientos y la participación de mujeres mineras.

El proyecto global planetGold Nicaragua contribuirá a formalizar al sector minería artesanal, promover la adopción de tecnologías limpias, promover el acceso a fuentes de financiamiento formales y cadenas de suministros justas con el fin de mejorar los ingresos de las familias del sector y condiciones de salud.
