The Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector plays a key role in Kenya’s economy. It supports the livelihoods of thousands of miners nationwide. However, the sector has long been faced by several challenges. This includes environmental degradation, unsafe mining practices, and the heavy use of toxic chemicals such as mercury. The planetGOLD Kenya project, aims to address these issues by creating a mercury-free, sustainable future for the ASGM sector. This article explores key lessons learned from the project’s journey, particularly in successfully fostering collaboration with county governments.

The Sagada Mercury-Free Processing System (MFPS) installed by the planetGOLD Philippines Project, was officially turned over to the Northern Sagada Barangay Small-Scale Miners Association, marking a major milestone in promoting responsible, mercury-free gold mining in the Philippines. Freetown, 12 November 2024 | Sierra Leone launches the GEF-funded planetGOLD project with the aim of reducing the use of mercury in the Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector, through a holistic, multisectoral integrated formalisation approach, and increasing access to finance leading to the adoption of sustainable mercury-free technologies and access to traceable gold supply chains.

The 2024 Media Kapihan Tungo sa Responsableng Maliitang Minahan (Coffee Chat Towards Responsible Small-Scale Mining) is a series of media dialogues aimed at promoting informed discussions about responsible artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in the Philippines. The second series was held in Quezon City, Metro Manila; Baguio City, Benguet; and Naga City, Camarines Sur. These discussions offer journalists valuable insights into the challenges, success stories, and policy developments related to ASGM, equipping them to create more comprehensive and impactful reports on the sector's socio-economic and environmental significance.

Paracale, Camarines Norte has strengthened its push for responsible and mercury-free gold mining through the signing of a Tripartite MOU between the local government, the Samahan ng mga Minero sa Barangay Casalugan (SMBC), and AGC Philippines through the planetGOLD Philippines Project. The agreement outlines each party’s roles in operating the Mercury-Free Processing System (MFPS), promoting women's participation, and ensuring environmental and social safeguards.
