The GEF-funded planetGOLD Ghana project has organised series of dialogue sessions with key stakeholders and Artisanal Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) value chain actors on mercury free gold processing technologies.

The Artisanal Gold Council Philippines, through the planetGOLD project, participated in the 17th OECD Forum in Paris, gaining insights into improving artisanal and small-scale gold mining. Key highlights included sharing experiences on the CRAFT Code and exploring ways to enhance miners' access to finance and formal markets.

To gain firsthand insights into artisanal and small-scale gold mining, Uganda government officials, alongside representatives from various stakeholders, embarked on a field visit to the Kayonza Mine Site.

The contest "Expedición Mercurio" aimed at secondary school students, was held in regions with artisanal and small-scale gold mining activities, including Arequipa, Piura, and Puno.

L'objectif de cette réunion extraordinaire était de permettre au chargé de la mise en œuvre du projet de rencontrer et d’échanger avec les membres du Comité. Elle visait également à présenter les missions et recommandations assignées aux membres et à l’équipe exécutante, suite à la précédente réunion tenue le 25 avril 2024.

El concurso “Expedición mercurio”, dirigido a estudiantes de educación secundaria, se realizó en zonas con presencia minera de oro artesanal y de pequeña escala en las regiones de Arequipa, Piura y Puno.

El evento sobre "Formalización en la MAPE Aurífera" que se llevó a cabo el martes 7 de mayo en el Hotel Europa de La Paz, Bolivia, para reflexionar sobre la importancia de la formalización en la minería artesanal y de pequeña escala (MAPE) aurífera, donde estuvieron presentes el Viceministro de Política Minera – Ing. Marcelo Ballesteros, representantes del ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Agua como del Ministerio de Salud y Deportes.

The planetGOLD Philippines Project, in partnership with Benguet Corporation and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, conducted a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Training in Itogon, Benguet, from April 22-26, 2024, aimed at enhancing the safety and environmental practices of small-scale miners in the ASGM sector. The training focused on TSF design, management, and emergency response strategies, contributing to responsible mining practices and community well-being.

In this edition, we are delighted to present updates on various fronts: the PSC's approval of the project report and work plan, the enthusiastic embrace of digitalization by artisanal miners, essential mine rescue and emergency experience gained by rescuers, collaborative efforts with the Ecological Police Unit to address Mercury harm, empowerment initiatives for women in the artisanal mining sector, insights into processing plant permits and documents for the ASGM community, and the spotlight on a compelling Mongolian ASGM case study featured in the World Bank DELVE report.

The planetGOLD Philippines Project has conducted alternative livelihood training for artisanal and small-scale gold miners in Paracale and Sagada, aiming to diversify income sources and enhance economic stability. Through hands-on sessions on various skills like meat processing and candle making, the initiative supports miners in transitioning to sustainable livelihoods as part of its broader capacity-building efforts.
