This document represents an expansion of the UNEP Guidance Document: Developing a National Strategic Plan to Reduce Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (UNEP 2011), and is intended to reflect advances in understanding of the ASGM sector. Although this guidance document is not legally binding and is not to be construed as a further elaboration or official interpretation of the Minamata Convention, it is intended to provide guidance to countries in formulating NAPs that are consistent with the requirements of the Minamata Convention, and provide technical, legal and policy information on issues related to ASGM
IMPACT documents how registered traders and exporters in DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda provide a sheen of legality by declaring a small percentage of their gold exports while pocketing massive profits from the illicit trade. They thwart attempts to disrupt their scheme by reconfiguring their operations across the region when necessary or by creating phantom entities.
The EIA investigates into one of the largest reported seizures of mercury exposing multiple countries in violation of national laws and the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

The purpose of the research was to look into the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) practices in Ghana’s ASGM sector, with a focus on ‘Ntotroso’, and uncover the flaws bringing awareness to regulators and other important stakeholders.
This technical report was prepared to assess the geological potential of the 130 km2 Djarkadougou Nord permit, located in south-west Burkina Faso in West Africa. The geological potential of the Djarkadougou North permit and its gold mineralization content has been proven for a long time. This study area, containing many artisanal gold mining sites, should allow the discovery of other economically exploitable gold mineralization, by the associations of artisanal miners from the villages located inside the permit and more specifically, that of village of Djarkadougou and the other small villages located within the boundaries of the study area.

Levin Sources and the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime produced two case studies identifying financial flows - both licit and illicit - in Mongolian and Filipino artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sectors. This report, focusing on Mongolia, provides a nuanced first-look at how stakeholders can better understand and respond to the role gold supply chains and financial flows play in formalization efforts.
The purpose of this report is to provide a geological basis for an informed opinion as to the status and nature of Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mine (ASGM) resources in the Mahdia area, Potaro-Siparuni region of Guyana

When artisanal and small-scale miners produce gold observing relevant environmental, social and governance standards, practical barriers to accessing international markets typically still remain. This report aims to inform the funders, leaders, and managers of existing and planned ASGM Market Access Initiatives, to highlight the impediments such initiatives face in establishing a flow of formal responsible ASM gold into international markets.
