    Challenges and Opportunities for Women at Artisanal Gold Mining Sites in Burkina Faso

    On recent visits to artisanal mine sites in Burkina Faso, men welcomed the installation of proposed mercury-free treatment unit, but the women miners expressed concerns that the unit would perform all operations of ore processing, eliminating the need for their labour and that if they then lost access to tailings that contain gold this would obliterate their only source of income.     Perú promueve campaña de sensibilización sobre el mercurio

    El Ministerio del Ambiente (MINAM) y el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD), a través del proyecto planetGOLD Perú, han iniciado la campaña de sensibilización “Expedición Mercurio”. Esta iniciativa se realizará del 10 al 30 de octubre con el objetivo de informar y sensibilizar sobre los impactos del mercurio en la salud y el ambiente en el marco del Convenio de Minamata sobre el Mercurio.

    Peru promotes mercury awareness campaign

    Peru's Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through the planetGOLD Peru project, have initiated an awareness campaign called "Expedition Mercury." This initiative will take place from October 10 to 30 with the objective of informing and raising awareness about the impacts of mercury on health and the environment within the framework of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

    The planetGOLD Mongolia project organized a training session titled “Minamata Convention on Mercury and ASGM” in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in Jargalant city, Khovd province, which coincided with the “Silent Threat of Mercury, Minamata Convention” photo exhibition co-organized by the planetGOLD Mongolia project and the Fresh Water Resource and Nature Conservancy Center.

    Chemical pollution projects in Ecuador receive USD $299,229

    Ecuador's Ministry of Environment and Water, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have provided USD $299,229.50 for the development of six projects to reduce pollution generated by chemical substances, specifically persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury.These actions will benefit 11,873 people in the provinces of Santa Elena, Pichincha, Azuay, El Oro and Zamora Chinchipe.
