In recent months, the global economy has been paralyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic. A new paper published by planetGOLD Peru puts a focus on the country's artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector, providing an analysis of the effects of the pandemic so far. The national coordinator for the project also proposes seven recommendations to facilitate the sector's reactivation and formalization process.

COVID-19 is having profound impacts throughout the world. Although the hardest hit areas so far are not artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) hot spots, as the virus spreads, this is sure to change quickly. The planetGOLD team is closely monitoring the potential impacts COVID-19 may have on the health and well-being of artisanal mining communities and our country projects.

This guest article based on the experiences of the Impact Facility and TDI’s research, supported by planetGOLD, considers the current status of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) as an impact investment sector, the barriers it faces, and ways to potentially erode these barriers.
