The planetGOLD Burkina Faso project is actively working to improve access to finance for both the men and women at its mine site. For the women, this also means accompanying them on their journey from employees to independent entrepreneurs. In this story meet Zourata Nacanabo, who made the move from artisanal miner to shaft owner and is championing the inclusion of women in the project's activities to improve health and livelihoods.

In Brazil a tool called the Mining Impacts Calculator has been used to show that the average monetary value of social and environmental damage generated by illegal ASGM represents more than double the ore’s market value. Developers of the tool at Conservation Strategy Fund believe the adjustable methodology used by the calculator can support other countries dealing with ASGM activities.

While both large-scale gold mining and artisanal and small-scale gold mining seek the same element, they differ in many aspects. This has often led to misunderstanding and sometimes outright conflict. However, fostering a better relationship between the two would be largely beneficial to all.

On International Women's Day (March 8) the struggle of women for equality, recognition, and effective exercise of their rights is commemorated. However, this date also reminds us of pending tasks such as the elimination of all types of psychological, physical, sexual, or patrimonial violence against women and girls.

In a symbolic act, the planetGOLD Colombia project, in alliance with CFA Cooperativa Financiera, delivered 6 of the 27 loans granted for small-scale mining and subsistence mining in Antioquia and Sur de Bolívar for close to 830 million pesos.

Given that cyanide is the current large-scale mining industry standard for gold extraction from milled ore, it may seem obvious that we should carefully consider its potential for ASGM as well. But can cyanide be a responsible alternative for ASGM?
