This case study documents the finance models implemented by the planetGOLD Guyana project in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities, with a consideration of the gender aspects of the projects.
In the planetGOLD programme design, a Global Project was created to foster co-learning and collaboration across projects in the programme. The Global Project aimed to support communication, outreach and knowledge sharing with a wide range of international stakeholders engaged in improving the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector. This report describes the activities, results and lessons learned from the execution of the first phase of the Global Project (2019-2025).

We are working toward the formalization and professionalization of the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector in Mongolia, including the elimination of mercury use in gold processing. Collaborating with stakeholders along the gold supply chain – miners, gold traders, local and national governments as well as civil society – will allow us to sustainably improve artisanal mining operations as an important economic opportunity for remote communities and to support the revision of regulations governing the sector. The full range of economic, social and environmental costs and benefits of large scale mining and artisanal and small scale mining remain unclear in Karamoja, Uganda. This study aims to conduct an economic, social and environmental cost-benefit analysis of LSM and ASM in the region, with a view to helping inform policy makers, civil society, mining companies, and development agencies on best bet policy, legal, regulatory, investment and environmental frameworks for responsible and equitable mining.
Oro Legal remains USAID’s largest and most ambitious bilateral initiative in support of ASGM and was implemented in two of Colombia’s emblematic mining departments — Antioquia and Chocó — between September 2015 and April 2021.
