The Ivorian Government has taken decisive action to protect the nation’s health and environment today, launching a $17-million project to reduce the use of mercury in its artisanal gold mining sector.

In line with pushing for the formalization of the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector in the Philippines, planetGOLD Philippines holds the Mountain Province leg of the policy workshop "Making Mercury History in the Philippine Small-scale Gold Mining Sector: Stories from the Minahang Bayan of Brgy. Fidelisan, Sagada" on 22-24 February 2023

The planetGOLD project will align Guinea with international best practice, strengthening regulation for the formalisation of artisanal miners, reinforcing women’s leadership within the sector and facilitating a dialogue between miners and financial institutions to encourage investment in ASGM

This year, we celebrated #EarthMonth2023 with the theme "Invest in Our Planet," which focused on engaging governments, institutions, businesses, and the more than 1 billion citizens who annually support Earth Day to do their part–everyone accounted for, everyone accountable. To highlight the voices from the communities and different sectors involved in creating a safer, cleaner, and more profitable ASGM industry in the country, planetGOLD Philippines featured people who shared their insights, hopes, and dreams on how protecting our planet can go hand-in-hand with sustainable small-scale mining.

The project covers nine Sub-Counties that collaborate with relevant regional government agencies, county governments, and mining communities to support the industry's formalization by setting up channels for artisanal miners to access information on lowering mercury use and encouraging ethical mining practices.

The planetGOLD Philippines conducts a workshop for the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and Mines and Geosciences Bureau on gold trading arrangements and engaging financial institutions to discuss the opportunities on the miners’ participation in the creation of a credit surety fund, forward purchase agreement, and developing social enterprises. Established partnerships with small-scale mining associations are expected to enable the project to pilot initiatives and programs in consultation with the concerned government agencies.
