Emergency action needed for vulnerable artisanal and small-scale mining communities and supply chains

Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) activities have been hit hard by the coronavirus and the ongoing nationwide curfew, as miners and investors contemplate on the future of the sub-sector. Among them is artisanal mining based partnership projects by mining consultancy firm -EcoCentric, which have been postponed.

This guide is an important step to better understanding the conflict dynamics and underlying issues between large-scale and small-scale mining. This guide for action not only points to some of the challenges that both parties need to deal with in order to build a more constructive relationship, but most importantly it sheds more light on some potential interventions for conflict prevention, management, and even transformation.

Burkina’s artisanal miners do not have direct access to the gold market, they sell their gold on the mine site to local buyers who work for the approved comptoirs located in the cities of Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso.

Currently, there are no alternatives available to artisanal miners to improve the gold supply chain during this COVID -19 crisis.

La MAPE a menudo se asocia con la degradación ambiental, la explotación de los trabajadores, las prácticas inseguras e incluso los conflictos. This report reviews past experiences with delivering financial and allied services to artisanal and small-scale mining and makes recommendations regarding best practices and potential ways forward in improving access to finance based on this experience.
