The second edition of Stories from the Field, highlights planetGOLD Uganda's ongoing commitment to advancing a mercury-free artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector. This edition shows the experiences of miners who have embraced mercury-free technologies at their sites, sharing their personal journeys, challenges, and successes. It also offers clear and practical technical insights into the alternative methods miners can adopt as part of the transition to safer, cleaner, and more responsible gold mining practices.

While women are active in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) workforce, they also typically face a range of gender-specific barriers that prevent their full participation. On the 25th of June 2025, the Government of Zimbabwe gazetted the long-awaited Mines and Minerals Bill, 2025. The gazetting of Zimbabwe's Mines and Minerals Bill marks a decisive step in the country's efforts to modernize its mining legislation. The Bill seeks to overhaul the regulatory framework governing the mining industry, modernizing the law to reflect contemporary industry realities. However, for the Bill to achieve its intended goals of fostering an equitable, sustainable, and inclusive mining sector, it must adequately address the realities of those working in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector.

The publications compiled in this resource page synthesize planetGOLD project initiatives among the initial group of countries in the programme, which supported the formalization of artisanal and small-scale gold mining. 

The reports give an overview of background information to contextualize each country project's formalization initiatives, then presents the key interventions that supported the formalization of ASGM in each context. The reports conclude with key lessons learned and recommendations.

In the planetGOLD programme design, a Global Project was created to foster co-learning and collaboration across projects in the programme. The Global Project aimed to support communication, outreach and knowledge sharing with a wide range of international stakeholders engaged in improving the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector. This report describes the activities, results and lessons learned from the execution of the first phase of the Global Project (2019-2025).

Strategic, inclusive communication and awareness raising practices play a critical role in educating miners and communities with artisanal and small-scale mining activities, while also helping build greater public support for transforming the ASGM sector with responsible, mercury-free mining practices.
