This handbook is the result of a training session which took place in Maputo, Mozambique from 26 to 30 September 2022, with participants from 16 countries in Southern African Region. This training aimed at building capacity in the Geological Surveys of the African continent in matters related to the assessment and management of mineral resources, use and sustainable land development, mitigation of natural risks and environmental protection.

The Indigenous Negotiations Resource Guide, designed in consultation with Indigenous partners, supports Indigenous peoples and local communities to negotiate effective and equitable benefit sharing agreements with those seeking to develop their lands, waters and resources, such as for extractive and infrastructure projects.

These guidelines are based on completed FPIC CI case studies and provide a complementary tool to CI’s institutional policies, including the recently updated Indigenous Peoples and CI Policy. They provide introductory and background information on FPIC, as well as actual steps for ensuring FPIC.
The guidelines provide basic practical guidance for the environmentally sound storage, handling, and transport of liquid mercury and mercury wastes in Peru, particularly wastes consisting of used elemental mercury and mercury contaminated materials. The guidance is adapted to the needs of Peru, which aims to progressively eliminate mercury use in artisanal and small-scale mining, and has committed to manage mercury wastes in compliance with the Minamata and Basel conventions.
