In Yalí, Antioquia, small miners are betting on environmentally sustainable practices that allow them to recover gold without the use of mercury. They are committed to a Mercury Free Colombia. Learn about the experience of some miners who trust in the cleaning of tailings for the extraction of valuable minerals and, mainly, strive to work for the care of human health and environmental preservation through their economic activity.

This deep-dive information session provided an opportunity to consider the Mainstreaming Gender document prepared for COP-4.

This Policy sets out the guiding principles and mandatory requirements for mainstreaming gender across the GEF’s governance and operations with a view to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in support of the GEF’s mandate to achieve global environmental benefits. This Policy supersedes the 2011 Gender Mainstreaming Policy

This report compiles toolkits, guidelines, and legal frameworks that have been devised and used by governments, international organizations, and civil society organizations to identify and address the gendered impacts of mining operations. It also features three case studies where these tools have been applied.

In this context, this study assessed total Hg (THg) in blood, urine and hair, and methylmercury (MeHg) in human hair samples from 238 participants with occupational exposure to Hg in the most relevant ASGM communities of Colombia.

The Centre for Environment Justice and Development (CEJAD) conducted a detailed investigation of the extent of mercury use in ASGM sites in Mikei, Masara and Osiri in Kenya.
