While the ASGM sector is present across Peru, the department of Madre de Dios is the epicenter of illicit alluvial gold extraction and the accompanying deforestation. This case study examines the complex drivers behind ASGM sector expansion, the devastating impacts on biodiversity in the region, and the strategies implemented to address the impacts of ASGM in Madre de Dios by the Government of Peru.

This report summarizes and analyzes gaps in the available educational and training material from projects and initiatives dealing with occupational safety and health (OSH) in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASGM) sector. The review focused on cataloguing the various technical aspects of occupational safety and health that are covered by the materials, but also examined the presentation of strategies and methodologies to manage hazard exposure, communication and awareness raising.
The report is available to download in English, French and Spanish.
Three additional related materials on occupational safety and health and ASGM are included
Formalization—the process of integrating ASGM into the formal economy, society, and regulatory system—is a critical step toward helping address environmental and social challenges in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector and and toward achieving the sector’s development potential.
