Highlighted in this case study are the results obtained by the NGO Solidaridad and the mining company Minera OREX in achieving a prefinancing model that allowed its artisanal and small-scale mining suppliers (ASM) in Peru to have liquidity for their activities. This case study is part of a larger body of work documenting financial access interventions for the ASGM sector. 

Highlighted in this case study are the results of the “Foundations for Peace in Artisanal Gold Mining in Burkina Faso” project implemented by the NGO IMPACT and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) from 2021 to 2023. One of the project’s objectives was to strengthen the economic empowerment and financial inclusion of women engaged in ASGM in the target locations. This guidance document outlines a framework of interventions that, taken together, provide governments with the tools to support the development of the ASM sector in a holistic and sustainable manner.

The authors present the value of remote sensing techniques to complement the knowledge on artisanal mining impacts, including for detection of illegal sites, the evaluation of the degradation of soils and waters, the deforestation and the monitoring of expansion of ASGM with time. While these techniques are relevant, they sometimes are blind  to gender issues, labor relations, mobility, migration, and insecurity.
