La Colombie est un pays dont la tradition minière remonte à l’époque précolombienne. En 2021, elle est devenue le quatrième exportateur d’or d’Amérique latine, avec une production de 56 tonnes. Toutefois, malgré cette production importante, 29 % des exportations d’or sont produites par seulement sept (7) grandes et moyennes exploitations minières. 71 % de la production d’or du pays provient d’activités minières à petite échelle (20,8 %) et de l’exploitation minière de subsistance (barequeo [forme d’orpaillage artisanale] et chatarreo [mise au rebut]), avec 50,3 %.
