This paper discusses opportunities to use remote sensing (RS) technologies in addressing the persistent global challenges related to the ASGM sector.
Finance entities including banks, microfinance institutions, and other lenders do not commonly provide loans/credit/financing to the ASGM sector as the risks are often perceived to be too high. To support financial entities and banks in developing financial products that would tailor to ASGM sector, the planetGOLD Indonesia project identified 8 modified/alternative models of current financing schemes/mechanisms for banks/financial entities that are detailed in this fact sheet.
One of the most significant barriers to the development of a responsible ASGM sector is access to finance. Finance entities including banks, microfinance institutions, and other lenders do not commonly provide loans/credit/financing to the ASGM sector as the risks are often perceived to be too high and such entities do not have the expertise and experience to review ASGM loan applications or develop financial products that are tailored to the ASGM sector. On the other hand, miners’ cooperatives and organizations do not have much experience in record keeping and reporting or the preparation of loan applications, which can increase their access

This case study documents the finance models implemented by the planetGOLD Peru project in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities, with a consideration of the gender aspects of the projects.
The objective of this report is to summarize gender dynamics in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector and their social and economic implications on women miners in Mongolia. The report concludes that, while some barriers exist, the ASGM sector offers viable livelihoods options for women and identifies encouraging opportunities for women to serve as agents of change for formalization and better mining practices.
