The full range of economic, social and environmental costs and benefits of large scale mining and artisanal and small scale mining remain unclear in Karamoja, Uganda. This study aims to conduct an economic, social and environmental cost-benefit analysis of LSM and ASM in the region, with a view to helping inform policy makers, civil society, mining companies, and development agencies on best bet policy, legal, regulatory, investment and environmental frameworks for responsible and equitable mining.

This case study is part of a larger body of work documenting financial access interventions for the ASGM sector.
Highlighted in this case study are the results of a financial inclusion program for Tanzania's artisanal and small-scale mining sector begun in 2021 by The Foundation of ASM Development (FADev) in collaboration with SWISSAID Tanzania and the National Bank of Commerce (NBC). The program developed two pilot finance mechanisms in an effort to address critical challenges faced by ASM operators. This case study is part of a larger body of work documenting financial access interventions for the ASGM sector.
Highlighted in this case study are the results of the “Foundations for Peace in Artisanal Gold Mining in Burkina Faso” project implemented by the NGO IMPACT and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) from 2021 to 2023. One of the project’s objectives was to strengthen the economic empowerment and financial inclusion of women engaged in ASGM in the target locations.
