This Annual Progress Report features key activities, milestones, and figures from 23 country projects across the programme for the July 2022 – June 2023 reporting period. In addition to narrative summaries of key activities and accomplishments among these projects, this report incorporates data on four key output indicators that are tracked across the programme: tonnes of mercury abated; number of miners supported in their formalization processes; amount of money made available to ASGM through financial mechanisms; and amount of responsible ASGM gold produced.

Ce guide pratique sur « La mine artisanale en Afrique Centrale, du Nord et de l’Est francophones » est le fruit d’un séminaire qui a pris place à Douala, Cameroun du 13 au 16 mars 2023.

This ASM handbook for the English speaking Eastern and Northern African Regions will serve as a guide on how to benefit from geological survey involvement in the ASM sector. It is the result of a training session which took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 13 to 16 November 2023, with participants from 16 countries from the Eastern and Northern African Regions.

This is a project that supports the training of geoscientific staff from African Geological Surveys through the development of an innovative training programme that includes the acquisition and development of important professional skills to complement their technical capabilities and qualifications. The training is focused on capacity building and understanding the concepts and practices of OHS issues in ASGM. It aims at educating artisanal miners in the OHS standard compliance, identification of hazards and risks, measurement, prevention, control and remediation of mine site-related hazards, and health risks caused by mercury.

This guidance sets out how mining and metals companies can handle and resolve local community grievances effectively, and in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). 

This guide provides an informative, accessible and highly practical reference source on biodiversity that can be used by mining companies at all stages of their operations – from initial exploration to mine closure planning and implementation.

The overarching goal of this handbook is to establish a common knowledge base on the impacts of mercury use in the ASM sector on human health and the environment among all the stakeholders involved in or connected with artisanal gold mining.
