Part of the toolkit Supporting Best Practices at Artisanal Gold Mines, developed by IMPACT, planetGOLD Uganda, and planetGOLD Côte d’Ivoire to help artisanal gold mining communities strengthen their capacity on issues that affect their health, safety, and livelihoods, this participant guide is designed primarily for artisanal miners, including women, who already have a basic understanding of gold mining but seek to deepen their knowledge of specific techniques. By focusing on practical, applicable skills, it enables miners to improve production while maintaining safety and security at mine sites.

The second edition of Stories from the Field, highlights planetGOLD Uganda's ongoing commitment to advancing a mercury-free artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector. This edition shows the experiences of miners who have embraced mercury-free technologies at their sites, sharing their personal journeys, challenges, and successes. It also offers clear and practical technical insights into the alternative methods miners can adopt as part of the transition to safer, cleaner, and more responsible gold mining practices.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) plays a vital role in Uganda's economic development, providing significant income and employment opportunities for miners and their communities. Since the planetGOLD project began in Uganda two years ago, the progress within the ASGM sector has been remarkable. This publication highlights the impact of the planetGOLD project, featuring stories directly from artisanal miners and our partners. 

The full range of economic, social and environmental costs and benefits of large scale mining and artisanal and small scale mining remain unclear in Karamoja, Uganda. This study aims to conduct an economic, social and environmental cost-benefit analysis of LSM and ASM in the region, with a view to helping inform policy makers, civil society, mining companies, and development agencies on best bet policy, legal, regulatory, investment and environmental frameworks for responsible and equitable mining.

This ASM handbook for the English speaking Eastern and Northern African Regions will serve as a guide on how to benefit from geological survey involvement in the ASM sector. It is the result of a training session which took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 13 to 16 November 2023, with participants from 16 countries from the Eastern and Northern African Regions.
