Analysis of Financial Access Interventions for the ASGM Sector

The materials on this resource page provide a summary and cross-programmatic analysis of planetGOLD phase 1 country project experiences on improving access to finance, including analysis of gender-based financial barriers addressed and opportunities created. Detailed case studies from 8 planetGOLD countries document ASGM access to financial mechanisms planned, developed and/or tested in these countries. Beyond this documentation of efforts within the planetGOLD programme, an additional set of case studies summarize financial access models undertaken by 6 initiatives outside the planetGOLD programme.

    This issue brief originally published in 2020 and updated in 2024 reviews past experiences with delivering financial and allied services to the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector and examines existing barriers to attracting formal finance and investment in the sector. It concludes with recommended interventions for governments, donors and other allies to help improve ASGM’s access to formal finance in the future.

    ASGM Financial Training Curriculum

    Artisanal Gold Council English

    ASGM is a largely informal entrepreneurial activity that has become vital to the economic structure and fabric of many countries. In order for artisanal and small-scale mining to transition away from being a predominantly informal activity linked to social and environmental problems, and towards a formal, professional and respected livelihood activity, miners will require the business infrastructure, financial literacy and planning skills necessary to secure loans and seek out new investors.
