Compilación de herramientas pedagógicas creadas por el proyecto planetGOLD Colombia en el transcurso del 2021 y 2022. Estos materiales tienen el objetivo de sensibilizar y generar conciencia sobre el mercurio y sus impactos.

This set of posters created by the planetGOLD Guyana project provides information about the dangers of mercury exposure, health problems it can cause, and practical tips miners can take to reduce the risk of exposure for themselves and their families.

This toolkit was developed as part of a workshop organized by the planetGOLD programme, bringing together journalists from diverse regions to explore solutions-based storytelling in the context of Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM). The toolkit provides a comprehensive guide to understanding ASGM and applying solutions journalism principles to create impactful narratives about this complex sector.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is often associated with environmental degradation, workers’ exploitation, unsafe practices and even conflict. However, the sector is also a source of employment and local economic development in some of the world’s most deprived areas, where few alternatives exist. Few are aware of these benefits, but effective communications can help provide a more balanced view. This issue brief summarizes an analysis of the state of play in ASGM communications (including barriers to effective communication) and emerging trends, along with recommendations aimed at communicators and decision-makers.

The issue

“Awareness-raising strategies to avoid the use of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining” is a document that systematizes and analyzes the awareness-raising activities carried out by the planetGOLD Peru project between 2020 and 2024. The document highlights lessons learned and strategies that allow for fine-tuning future initiatives linked to awareness-raising in localities where artisanal and small-scale gold mining is practiced. The video explains the four worst practices in ASGM. According to the Minamata Convention, each National Action Plan on ASGM must include actions to eliminate them. The video also introduces best practices to reduce and eliminate the use of mercury in ASGM.
