Supporting Informed Action: Researchers Advance ASGM Understanding in Zambia.

Voices

In the second quarter, March to June 2025, the planetGOLD Zambia project engaged a team of researchers to support a nationwide update of baseline data on, mercury use, environmental impacts, and the current state of Zambia’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector. This initiative aimed to inform project interventions and promote responsible mining practices.

The researchers underwent a two-week orientation covering digital data collection tools (KoboToolbox), GPS mapping, mercury estimation, stakeholder engagement, and ethical research conduct. Initial Site visits to Rufunsa – Kamwesha and Mumbwa provided hands-on exposure to real-world ASGM operations.

Working in teams across different provinces, the researchers collected data through interviews, focus group discussions, stakeholder consultations, environmental observation, and geotagging. Real-time digital tools ensured data accuracy and efficiency. A contextual study was conducted across six ASGM sites: Mumbwa, Chisamba, Mpika, Kabombo, Lusanganzi, and Vubwi.

Key Recommendations:
During the close-out meeting, the team recommended that the project:
1.    Expand its reach to all ASGM-active areas in Zambia
2.    Address broader issues like land tenure and livelihoods

3.    Deliberate focus on solutions for practical and simple mining tools for ASGM that can make their work easier

4.    Continued investment in local research capacity and field-based evidence gathering to strengthen the sector

This research initiative enhanced the planetGOLD Zambia project’s understanding of the ASGM sector and generated insights that will inform mercury reduction strategies, formalization efforts, and improved community outcomes.
