On Friday, 8th August 2025, the planetGOLD Zambia Project hosted the University of Zambia Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) Awareness event at the University of Zambia (UNZA). The gathering attracted students from multiple faculties eager to learn more about the ASGM sector’s challenges, opportunities, and responsible practices.
Empowering Women in ASGM.
National Project Manager, Ms. Abigail Mwailenge, highlighted key findings from the recently concluded contextual study. Among them was the encouraging statistic that women’s participation in the ASGM sector has increased from 17% to 22.31% across various ASGM Sites, an important milestone in gender inclusivity.
The Case for Mercury-Free Processing.
Dr. Jewtte Masinja, a lecturer in UNZA’s School of Mines, addressed the environmental and health risks of mercury use in ASGM. He emphasised that mercury does not improve gold recovery rates, reinforcing the need for Mercury-Free Processing Systems that are both safer and more efficient.
Sector Realities and Opportunities.
Representing ZCCM-IH, Mr. Henry Sampa shed light on the current realities of Zambia’s ASGM sector, including a shortage of skilled labour, limited machinery, and low productivity. He noted that the sector often focuses on small deposits unsuitable for modern mining techniques.
Youth Engagement in the ASGM Value Chain.
Mr. James Mwenya, a Community Development Expert, encouraged students to explore opportunities within the ASGM supply chain. He outlined potential career and business paths in exploration, mining, processing, transportation, trading, finance, equipment supply, and business advisory services.
Closing with Music and Inspiration.
The event concluded with a lively performance by renowned Zambian music icon Mwila Musonda, popularly known as Slap Dee. His trending singles created an energetic atmosphere, leaving students both informed and entertained.
Through such initiatives, planetGOLD Zambia continues to raise awareness, inspire action, and promote mercury-free, responsible gold mining practices across the country.
