From 26 to 28 January, planetGOLD Suriname held a technical working session in preparation for two mercury-free gold mining pilot projects in the Sarakreek and Lebi Doti areas.
Through internal technical alignment and stakeholder consultations, key agreements were reached on technical design, implementation planning, roles and responsibilities, and exit strategies. The pilots focus on Component 3 of the project, aimed at increasing the adoption of mercury-free technologies in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector.
A fixed 5-ton processing plant will be installed in Sarakreek, while a mobile field laboratory will be introduced in the Lebi Doti area for processing and monitoring. In addition to technical interventions, the project emphasizes capacity building to reduce environmental and health risks.
Procurement has been completed, with equipment delivery expected in April/May. An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) is being prepared in parallel.
planetGOLD Suriname continues to work closely with the Ministry of Natural Resources, UNDP, and project partners such as The GEF to ensure responsible implementation.
