planetGOLD Suriname has completed the installation of a digital registration system supporting the formalization and monitoring of the gold mining sector. This activity is part of the planetGOLD Suriname / GEF GOLD+ project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through a grant of USD 5,250,000 and jointly implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The system is currently in its testing and optimization phase to ensure reliability, data integrity, and long-term sustainability.
While the core installation is complete, several technical adjustments are still required. These include updates to the registration application and server configurations to enable the proper management of registered clients. At this stage, it is not yet possible to deactivate or remove registered clients who are no longer active in the sector. This functionality will be addressed through a planned system update.
The installed equipment is fully compatible with the existing Small-Scale Gold Mining Sector Organization (OKGS) registration system. However, data storage is not yet fully operational, as the system is currently undergoing testing to validate performance, security, and stability before full deployment.
To ensure optimal server performance and uninterrupted data collection, a higher-capacity Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is required. OKGS is currently in discussions with the supplier regarding this upgrade. At this time, it is not yet clear when discussions will take place with the Project Management Unit (PMU) should additional costs be involved.
All data to be entered into the system will follow the same formats as the registration forms currently used by OKGS. This alignment will significantly facilitate the integration of historical data, as well as enable faster, more efficient, and more effective entry of new data, given that the format is already familiar to users.
planetGOLD Suriname emphasizes the critical importance of a robust and well-configured server environment for accurate data collection, secure storage, and efficient system performance. Appropriate components, including server capacity, backup solutions, power stability, and security settings, are essential to ensure the system can effectively support sector oversight and decision-making.
