planetGOLD Phase 2

planetGOLD is growing!

In June 2020, the Council of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) approved a new programme to expand planetGOLD by eight countries and nearly 44 million USD. The programme will leverage co-financing of over 202 million USD from national governments, GEF agencies, international and national civil society organizations, bilateral development agencies, multilateral finance institutions, and the private sector.

This second phase of planetGOLD is expected to start in 2021 and run through 2025. The programme will be led by Conservation International and implemented together with the United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the United Nations Development Programme. Country projects will take place in:

bolivia

Bolivia

congo

Congo

Ghana

Ghana

Honduras

Honduras

madagascar

Madagascar

Nigeria

Nigeria

suriname

Suriname

Uganda

Uganda

This second phase will continue to work within the same four knowledge areas: Technical Solutions, Access to Finance, Formalization, and Awareness Raising. Whereas phase one of planetGOLD puts special emphasis on finance and investment, phase 2 will focus on promoting holistic, multisectoral, and integrated approaches to formalization.

Details of planetGOLD phase 2 can be found in the GEF project database: Global Opportunities for Long-term Development of artisanal and small-scale gold mining Sector Plus (GOLD+)
