Opening the one-day training workshop, Mr. Lovelace Sarpong, the Project Coordinator, said the CRAFT Code is an important tool that can enhance the Artisanal small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) through effective due diligence and assessment. He added that, the planetGOLD programme set of criteria for ASGM operations is aligned with the CRAFT code and is therefore imperative that some level of awareness is created on it for project beneficiaries.
Mr. Sarpong disclosed that the pilot sites were selected based on the criteria set out by the programme.
Mrs. Rosemary Addico, Programme Manager-Responsible Gold, Solidaridad West Africa delivered the training. She explained the 5 key modules under the Code and its application in the ASGM sector. She also touched on the CRAFT Code baseline assessment and the checklist. She told participants that, the CRAFT Code serves as a passport to the formal market for mining companies and artisanal small-scale miners.
The training took place on Monday 22nd January 2024 at the Environmental Protection Agency, Accra and was attended by the Coordinator for the Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Programme, representatives from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Ghana Landscape Restoration, Small Scale Mining Project (GLRSSMP) and members of the planetGOLD Ghana Project Management Unit.
