Part of a series titled Golden Myths: Digging for the truth about artisanal and small-scale gold mining, designed and facilitated by Solidaridad and The Impact Facility, this webinar examined the widespread use of mercury in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector.
Speakers:
- Susan Egan Keane, Senior Director of Global Strategies (International Program), Natural Resources Defense Council; planetGOLD global project manager
- Barbara Hendus, Program Officer Extractives & Conservation at IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands (IUCN NL)
- Cyrus Njonde Maina, Regional Manager East Africa at The Impact Facility
Susan Keane, head of the global knowledge management and communications project for planetGOLD, discussed alternatives to mercury use in the sector and critically reflected on what barriers need to be addressed to drive their adoption among artisanal miners.
The webinar was facilitated by David Sturmes, Value Chain Development Lead at The Impact Facility. Other speakers included Cyrus Njonde Maina, mining engineer and regional manager East Africa at The Impact Facility, who shared first-hand accounts on the difficulties of promoting alternatives to mercury among miners in East Africa, and Barbara Hendus, Program Officer Extractives & Conservation at IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands (IUCN NL), who shone a light on the informal and often illicit trade of mercury and addressed questions on how mercury reaches the mining communities across Africa and Asia.
The webinar was aimed at professionals working all along the supply chain, from gold refiners, traders, jewelry and electronic brands to impact investors and donors.
