Governments, private sector, NGOs gathered in London to launch ambitious effort to fight mercury pollution in artisanal and small-scale gold mining
Countries:
At this milestone event, participants learned more about the planetGOLD Programme, and exchanged ideas with members of the financial community, gold buyers and users, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASGM) policy experts, and governments, regarding specific opportunities for collaboration, investment and creating responsible gold supply chains. The launch was hosted by UN Environment, UNIDO and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), who are co-leads of the ASGM Area of the Global Mercury Partnership.
From smartphones to wedding rings, gold passes through all of our hands every day. But for most of us the source of that gold, and its real cost, remains a mystery. Introducing safe, mercury-free technologies into the ASGM sector will help provide a safe transition to job formality and dignified work for millions, while putting an end to the environmental impacts that can pave the way to sustainably produced gold.
