From 2002 to 2007, the Global Mercury Project demonstrated ways of overcoming barriers to the adoption of best practices and pollution prevention measures that limit the mercury contamination of international waters from artisanal and small-scale gold mining. This project has developed materials for training miners on technical alternatives and improvements that can be introduced to ASGM operations. These materials were designed with the goal of helping to improve efficiency in the mining process to increase gold recovery while simultaneously reducing the reliance on mercury in ASGM.
