Social and environmental harm continues to emanate from global commodity production despite the array of governance programs trying to mitigate it. This paper examines the evolution of transnational certification standards in an understudied sector: artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM).
This report summarizes the activities and results of the project Developing Training Materials to Promote the Reduction of Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining. Overall, the project sought to produce a business training module based on leading global practice in ASGM and designed to promote Minamata Convention compliance. This project is intended to enhance coordination among ASGM education programs throughout the APEC region in support of domestic and international mercury reduction efforts.

Ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury has led to the establishment of Peruvian regulations limiting mercury concentrations in air to 2000 ng/m3 over a 24-hr measurement period. As a result, three communities in Madre de Dios, Peru were mapped during October 2017 to determine Hg0 vapor concentrations in the air.
Hear from participants in the launch event for the planetGOLD programme (formerly known as GEF GOLD), held on February 18-19, 2019 in London, about their views on the opportunities and potential impacts a cleaner, more responsible ASGM sector could make in mining communities around the world.
Featuring highlights from the July 2019 launch event for the GEF GOLD (now called planetGOLD) project in Colombia, this video gives an overview of the project's objective to support 11 artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) municipalities to reduce mercury use by 20 tonnes over the course of the 5-year project.
This infographic features a visual summary of the key facts and figures about ASGM. It provides answers to questions such as: Why is it hard to formalize the sector; Why is mercury used in ASGM; How does the Minamata Convention safeguard the ASGM sector? Key strategies through which the planetGOLD programme is transforming the sector are also presented.
