This study of mercury levels in women from four Latin American communities is the latest compilation of data in IPEN’s global mercury biomonitoring program. Hair samples were taken from women living in or near the mining towns of Vila Nova, Brazil, El Callao, Venezuela, Íquira, Colombia, and two groups living in Bolvia's Beni river system.

Pact Zimbabwe has piloted trainings to enhance artisanal and small-scale gold miners’ skills in three districts: Gwanda, Kwekwe and Shurugwi. Trainings have covered topics which include; safety and environment management, mining legislation, efficient mining techniques, mercury abatement, child labour, gender equality & mining and financial literacy. Women play a critical role in the ASM sector. Women were estimated in 2003 to make up 30% of the ASM workforce globally. Today it may be much higher – estimates from some countries reach 50% on average, and higher in some mineral categories (e.g. salt mining in Uganda). Despite this, women experience a number of gendered barriers to full participation in ASM.
