The MIT D-Lab Inclusive Economies program and the Alliance for Responsible Mining in Colombia, joined together to launch a two-year program addressing gender-based violence affecting women engaged in artisanal and small-scale gold mining in the Antioquia region of Colombia.
The project uses an innovative movement-building approach to foster women miners’ associations and homegrown advocacy to address social and economic gender-based violence in mining communities in Andes, Zaragoza, Nechí, and El Bagre in Antioquia, Colombia.

This report examines four countries whose central banks actively purchase gold from domestic ASGM production, and considers lessons learned in formulating policies towards ASGM. It describes central bank domestic purchase models, the impact they can have on improving practices associated with small-scale gold production, and the benefits of domestic gold buying for reserve management purposes.

Recognizing that lasting change requires addressing root economic and social drivers of mercury use, planetGOLD is working to accelerate formalization, increase access to formal finance and open avenues to formal gold markets, creating the enabling conditions for the uptake of more efficient, mercury-free technology. The study emphasizes how national officials invoked “formalization” rationales for mining policy shifts that obscured their underlying political and economic drivers, disempowering local district authorities and deepening the marginalization of informal livelihoods.
