MIT D-Lab and Alliance for Responsible Mining English
The MIT D-Lab Inclusive Economies program and the Alliance for Responsible Mining in Colombia, joined together to launch a two-year program addressing gender-based violence affecting women engaged in artisanal and small-scale gold mining in the Antioquia region of Colombia.
The project uses an innovative movement-building approach to foster women miners’ associations and homegrown advocacy to address social and economic gender-based violence in mining communities in Andes, Zaragoza, Nechí, and El Bagre in Antioquia, Colombia.
Step-by-step guide for developing a public health strategy for artisanal and small-scale gold mining in the context of the Minamata Convention on Mercury
World Health Organization English
Researchers or other assessors should use this guide to help ministries of health develop a public health strategy as part of the ASGM National Action Plan. The evidence collected will clarify key issues to consider for the public health strategy. The approach for collecting and using the evidence was developed by WHO and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and pilot-tested in three countries – Ghana, Mozambique and Nigeria – between 2017 and 2019.

This report examines four countries whose central banks actively purchase gold from domestic ASGM production, and considers lessons learned in formulating policies towards ASGM. It describes central bank domestic purchase models, the impact they can have on improving practices associated with small-scale gold production, and the benefits of domestic gold buying for reserve management purposes.

Developing public health strategies for artisanal and small-scale mining within the Minamata Convention on Mercury: findings and lessons learned from country workshops
World Health Organization English
To support ministries of health develop their detailed public health strategies for inclusion in ASGM National Action Plans (NAP), WHO, in collaboration with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, developed a research approach. The approach was pilot tested in three African countries in the process of developing a NAP. The evidence collected and the recommendations that emerged by applying the research approach guided ministries of health and other stakeholders in developing the public health strategies. This document is also available in French, Spanish and Portuguese.

The technology, jewelry, financial, and automotive sectors are increasingly at risk of purchasing gold that benefits armed groups responsible for mass atrocities in multiple countries in East and Central Africa. Five main policy issues continue to incentivize the conflict gold trade and disincentivize the responsible artisanal trade, presenting key opportunities for action by governments, companies, and banks.
The planetGOLD programme sets out specific criteria to govern the operations of artisanal and small-scale gold mining entities engaged with the programme. The planetGOLD Criteria align with the CRAFT Code, and include three criteria that are specific to the planetGOLD programme: eliminating mercury in the mining process, respecting and protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and minimizing impact on biodiversity. Conformance with this criteria will ensure that artisanal and small-scale miners participating in the planetGOLD programme undertake sufficient efforts to avoid, minimize, mitigate, and where appropriate, offset adverse impacts to people and the environment.
The Quick Start Guide summarizes and provides a visual overview of the key issues and recommendations for incorporating gender dimension into National Action Plans for artisanal and small scale gold mining. The document is based on the detailed guidance presented in UNEP's Guide on Incorporating Gender Dimensions into National Strategy Setting in the Context of Chemicals Management - currently in its draft version.

This Special Report highlights the significant, yet chronically underreported major role African women play in the sector, more so in artisanal and small scale mining (ASM). In Africa, the ASM workforce comprises no less than 40-50% women; this report highlights a selection of them in Ghana, Guinea and Tanzania, and reveals the key challenges that women face in the sector and what can be done to make it more gender-responsive
