Evaluating and Monitoring Small Scale Gold Mining and Mercury Use: Building a Knowledge-base with Satellite Imagery and Field Work

This project was a pilot study at building a basic database for ASM sites in Brazil and Indonesia. The aim was to combine field work with satellite imagery to build a database that would span spatial scales and times greater than possible through field work alone.

This paper presents results of mercury (Hg) in surface waters and soils and an analysis of satellite imagery from the Tapajo´s River basin, Brazilian Amazon, and the Reserva Garimpeira do Tapajo´s, the legal gold mining district of the basin.
The 2019/2020 Annual Progress Report published by planetGOLD provides an overview of the progress made since the launch of the planetGOLD programme in early 2019 and includes data from the initiation of each of the national projects through fall 2020. This executive summary provides a snapshot of the key points from the full report, across the programme's 4 key programmatic areas: formalization, access to finance, technical solutions, and access to formal markets.
Recognizing that lasting change requires addressing root economic and social drivers of mercury use, planetGOLD is working to accelerate formalization, increase access to formal finance and open avenues to formal gold markets, creating the enabling conditions for the uptake of more efficient, mercury-free technology. The planetGOLD Guyana project is assisting artisanal and small-scale gold mining communities implement mercury-free technologies that also increase yield and profits. This video demonstrates the use of three types of equipment that concentrate gold from alluvial deposits without using mercury - the gold kacha, gold cube, and blue bowl. The devices can be used in combination with each other and with other equipment to create an efficient and mercury-free gold recovery process.
While the ASGM sector is present across Peru, the department of Madre de Dios is the epicenter of illicit alluvial gold extraction and the accompanying deforestation. This case study examines the complex drivers behind ASGM sector expansion, the devastating impacts on biodiversity in the region, and the strategies implemented to address the impacts of ASGM in Madre de Dios by the Government of Peru.
Understanding the use and trade of toxic chemicals in artisanal gold mining: The case of Burkina Faso

This note shines light on the use and trade of toxic chemicals in ASGM in Burkina Faso. It argues that interventions to reduce the use of mercury in ASGM operations need to be designed keeping in mind the complexity of the sector, including the actors involved and the fluid arrangements that they strike to win gold. In fact, mercury and gold trade are closely interlinked. Moreover, mercury has become an integral part in the pre-financing arrangements, a dominant form of funding operations in return for gold. These networks of pre-financiers are involved in the smuggling of gold to avoid paying taxes.

This article discusses implications of domestic cinnabar mining for controlling mercury in Indonesia's ASGM sector, highlighting obstacles to implementing the Minamata Convention, a treaty that aims to restrict mercury use. We link discussion of mercury mining to other socioeconomic processes, labour relations and power dynamics shaping mercury use in gold mining and hindering collectivised mercury-free technology uptake.
The Migori County Artisanal Miners Cooperative Society (MICA), in collaboration with UNESCO and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and with support from CIRDI, created this documentary on ASGM in Migori to shed light on this sector and to give Kenyan gold miners a voice.

This report documents the illicit mercury flows in Mindanao, Philippines as well as the various governance practices for mercury in the study areas. The study is conducted by BAN Toxics and focuses on Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) communities in the island, where the majority of illicit mercury enters the country.
