The planetGOLD Knowledge Repository
This handbook is the result of a training workshop for staff from the geological survey authorities, the regulatory agencies and the universities involved in the ASM sector to strengthen their capacity to better assist the country’s ASM operators. It is intended to serve as a reference for the future involvement of the geological survey authority’s staff in the country’s ASM sector.
The 2019/2020 Annual Progress Report published by planetGOLD provides an overview of the progress made since the launch of the planetGOLD programme in early 2019 and includes data from the initiation of each of the national projects through fall 2020. Recognizing that lasting change requires addressing root economic and social drivers of mercury use, planetGOLD is working to accelerate formalization, increase access to formal finance and open avenues to formal gold markets, creating the enabling conditions for the uptake of more efficient, mercury-free technology. This report provides an overview of the progress made since the launch of the planetGOLD programme in early 2019 and includes data from the initiation of each of the national projects through fall 2020.

This article offers preliminary reflections on the potential impact of COVID-19 on artisanal and small-scale mining activities in sub-Saharan Africa. In doing so, it revisits the core ideas put forward in the literature in support of showcasing the sector more prominently in the region’s rural development strategies.

This encyclopedia offers a snapshot of some of the key actors, initiatives and programmes in the field of gender and mining. It is intended as a living document, there to help practitioners gain an overview of the sector and potentially ideas for projects or collaborations, rather than as a comprehensive document setting out the definitive list of who is who in the field.

Burkina’s artisanal miners do not have direct access to the gold market, they sell their gold on the mine site to local buyers who work for the approved comptoirs located in the cities of Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso.
Currently, there are no alternatives available to artisanal miners to improve the gold supply chain during this COVID -19 crisis.
Health responses to COVID-19 in the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining sector: Mitigating the risk of infiltration, spread and severity
Mareike Kroll and Kevin Telmer English
The looming third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have devastating impacts in many countries in the Global South, with far worse health outcomes and economic implications. While formal and informal income sources in LMICs are collapsing, the ASGM sector offers a rare and desperately needed income opportunity due to the stable or rising international gold price. At the same time, artisanal mining communities can be considered as most-affected and at-risk group according to the UN Global Humanitarian Response Plan COVID-19.
A combination of factors is driving the continued use of mercury, including the lucrativeness of the trade, the informality of the ASGM sector, the poverty of many miners and the power imbalance between many traders and miners. Mercury governance within the investigated countries has potential for improvement. To tackle the mercury problem, action should be taken that addresses the problem from all angles and takes all key stakeholders into account. The report is a compilation of findings from investigations that IUCN NL’s local partner organisations carried out. More detailed findings for each country can be found in the respective country/regional report.
