The interaction between large-scale mining companies and artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations has not always been positive, and encounters between the two sectors are increasing. There are a number of ASM sustainable development challenges – including security, human rights and relocation programs – that can require specific ASM consideration.
With support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Just Gold project has conducted two environmental field assessments and developed steps to implement recommendations on environmental management techniques and technical assistance to reduce mercury use in gold mining.
Using Performance Indicators to Evaluate an Environmental Education Program in Artisanal Gold Mining Communities in the Brazilian Amazon
Rodolfo N. Sousa and Marcello M. Veiga English
The Tapajos River Basin in the Brazilian Amazon is the location of one of the largest concentrations of artisanal and small-scale miners in the world. A group of educators provided support to miners, training 4200 people in 141 mining locations. The effectiveness of this training was evaluated based on 20 performance indicators. After 120 days of training, an absolute improvement of approximately 29% had been achieved.
This guidance document outlines a process to assess and manage the environmental impacts of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) for governments and miners. The approach focuses on incremental and achievable environmental outcomes at individual ASM mines.
Economic reactivation in the context of Covid 19, sustainable development, and artisanal and small scale mining
Cristian Darío Castro Urrego, Head of Governance for ARM English
In general, reactivation plans in the context of Covid 19 should make State investments flow, along with those from big companies, international cooperation and philanthropy to put resources into the pockets of several economic actors (small companies, cooperatives, associations, ASM organizations, women organizations, community organizations, vulnerable families, among others). This should take place with a strategic approach of design and implementation of local projects, subsidies and microcredits to activate the economies of the countries, especially in marginal urban zones and rural zones where there is ASM activity.
TRANSMAPE. Community Engagement for the Transformation of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining and Social Learning
The TransMAPE project was the result of coordinated action between the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (CIRDI) and the Vice Ministry of Mines in Ecuador with its related institutions, and with the support of other academic institutions and community-based ASM organizations. The primary long-term objective of the TransMAPE project was to co-design a training program for miners, communities, regulators and policy-makers to assist in the technical certification of small-scale artisanal mining in Ecuador. CIRDI’s aim was for a competency-based training program that builds the capacity of ASM miners.
This video gives an overview of the ASGM sector and how the planetGOLD programme is working in partnership with governments, the private sector, and mining communities in 9 countries to significantly improve the production practices and work environment of artisanal and small-scale miners.
The Migori County Artisanal Miners Cooperative Society (MICA), in collaboration with UNESCO and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and with support from CIRDI, created this documentary on ASGM in Migori to shed light on this sector and to give Kenyan gold miners a voice.
