Developing Training Materials to Promote the Reduction of Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining
APEC Secretariat English
This report summarizes the activities and results of the project Developing Training Materials to Promote the Reduction of Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining. Overall, the project sought to produce a business training module based on leading global practice in ASGM and designed to promote Minamata Convention compliance. This project is intended to enhance coordination among ASGM education programs throughout the APEC region in support of domestic and international mercury reduction efforts.
Knowledge-sharing in ASM Communities: Mercury, Technology, and Sustainability in Developing Countries
Spiegel, S. J., & Veiga, M. M. English
While various past development efforts have sought to reduce mercury-related problems, we conclude that sustainable development should seek to intertwine knowledge-sharing on environmental goals with concrete ways of improving economic well-being. We demonstrate how such models of knowledge-sharing can help to catalyze local innovation, technology-sharing and community organization. This paper discusses how this knowledge can be applied by governments to create capacity building policies as well as regulations that support sustained improvement in mining standards.
Guidance Document: Developing a National Action Plan to Reduce and Where Feasible, Eliminate Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining
United Nations Environment Program Global Mercury Partnership English
This document represents an expansion of the UNEP Guidance Document: Developing a National Strategic Plan to Reduce Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (UNEP 2011), and is intended to reflect advances in understanding of the ASGM sector. Although this guidance document is not legally binding and is not to be construed as a further elaboration or official interpretation of the Minamata Convention, it is intended to provide guidance to countries in formulating NAPs that are consistent with the requirements of the Minamata Convention, and provide technical, legal and policy information on issues related to ASGM.

UNEP, Africa Institute English
The report discusses the challenges and solution encountered by countries developing National Action Plan for artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM).
UNEP, UNITAR English
This document aims to assist countries to develop artisanal and small-scale gold mining formalization strategies as part of their National Action Plans under the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
World Health Organization English
This site contains multiple information documents on the dangerous effects of mercury such as: health impacts, tools for actions, guidance documents, fact sheet and other educational materials.
State Gold-Buying Programmes: Effective instruments to reform the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector?
RCS Global English
Can state gold-buying programmes (SGBPs) be an effective tool for governments – to not only bolster state financial reserves, but also to reform the sector, raising its standards and improving its environmental and social outcomes? And can these programmes operate in countries that often lack institutional capacity, infrastructure and stability? This paper analyses case studies in five countries, drawing out the challenges and potential factors for success in developing an effective SGBP.
Battelle and The Cadmus Group, Inc. USAID English
These guidelines are designed for project managers, project implementers, practitioners, or others working on development or environmental management projects that could impact ASM projects or communities that engage in ASM. This document addresses: (1) impact of development projects on ASM; (2) impacts of ASM on the environment, health, and socio-political systems; (3) best practices on mitigation measures for minimizing impacts of ASM; (4) impact of climate change on ASM; and (5) impact of ASM on climate change.
Pact Institute English
This report includes findings and recommendations from Pact's scoping study of the ASM sector in Zimbabwe.
World Bank English
This report showcases data contributions made to Delve and demonstrates the potential for a deeper sector analysis when stakeholders share data. As the inaugural report of a planned annual series, the 2019 edition explores the origins and impact of what is identified as the ‘global data gap’ on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). It outlines how through collaboration, the gap can be addressed to guide more effective ASM formalization efforts across the globe. Future reports will examine emerging themes of critical importance to ASM.
